Study and detection of residential vulnerability areas in the city of Barcelona

This research aims to develop a system that should serve to know the socio-spatial characteristics of the residential space in different neighborhoods and sectors of the city. It is a question of building an array of geospatial information that includes sociodemographic, socioeconomic, urban planning and housing status, sufficient to establish a differentiation measure relative to the degree of residential vulnerability of some neighborhoods with respect to, in order to seek balance measures between them. It is based on the data of the general statistics complemented with the data of the city council as well as other entities, which provide a very accurate information of the city.

The proposal is an advance in the effort to operationalize the concept of vulnerability and make it measurable and analytical. With this objective, the AVU elaborates a proposal for dimensionalization of the concept that includes four major dimensions or basic axes: sociodemographic, socio-economic, residential and, finally, subjective vulnerability.

1. Socio-demographic vulnerability.
           · Percentage of single-person households over 64 years of age
           · Overgrowth index
           · Index of foreign population in childhood
           · Aliens Index 2001 and 2006
           · Percentage of one-parent households

2. Socio-economic vulnerability.
           · Unemployment
           · Youth unemployment rate
           · Temporary employment rate
           · Rate of unskilled workers
           · Rate of population without studies

3. Residential Vulnerability
           · Percentage of homes with a useful area less than 31 square meters
           · Average area of housing per occupant
           · Percentage of people residing in homes without service or toilet.
           · Percentage of homes in buildings built before 1951

4. Subjective vulnerability
           · Housing is affected by external noise.
           · Housing is affected by pollution or bad smells.
           · Your place of residence has bad communications.
           · Your place of residence has few green areas nearby.
           · Your place of residence is affected by a social environment in which delinquency and vandalism are a problem.

In summary, the purpose of this research is to address the socio-spatial dimension, which helps to define an area of interest for intervention in the context of the city's Barriers Plan, which means addressing different aspects of the structure Socio-social, in its different scales of city and neighborhood, as well as in the many urban, environmental, urban planning, housing and socioeconomic topics.
